A little history for this story is required. First, Shane loves God, and he can read well. He has read and been taught scripture from the Bible for years. Second, my Dad often serves as “food delivery” for Shane at his group home. If Shane doesn’t like what the group home is serving, he will ask my Dad to bring him what he wants. Since retirement, my Dad has been very accommodating in this manner and has proved to be a great delivery person for Shane.
One evening a few years ago, I was riding in the car with Shane and my parents. Shane had been having some behavioral problems and outbursts at his group home that were concerning to us all. We began to talk about these issues with Shane during the ride, which he did not like. Dad suggested not bringing special deliveries of food by to the group home because Shane sometimes exhibited bad behavior after these visits. Basically, Shane was getting a little spoiled and thought he could order others around! When Dad asked Shane how he thought this idea sounded, Shane looked over at me and shook his head. Then he responded very seriously, “I think it sounds like you are being a Hypocrite and a Pharisee!” I couldn’t contain my laughter and still can’t when thinking about it years later! This statement has now become a popular saying in our home whenever one of us doesn’t like something the other is saying…it still causes much laughter on a regular basis.
